MDC-T peace rally rescheduled

The MDC-T has rescheduled its peace rally, which was cancelled last Saturday, to Sunday at Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfield.
On Saturday, Zanu PF youths sealed off Glamis Arena, the MDC-T venue for the planned rally near Exhibition Park and assaulted several defiant MDC-T supporters and passersby while police watched from a distance.

Party spokesperson Nelson Chamisa said the attacks were aimed at provoking their supporters to engage in violence.

“It’s clear that they are pushing us to the limit and they are taking us for granted and abusing our magnanimity and restraint. They are trying to push us into violence, but we shall remain steadfast in fighting the temptation,” said Chamisa.

“They want to frustrate us; they want to wear us down, but we are ready for the marathon. The harassment, lies and embarrassment we endure at great sacrifice is nothing but the darkest hour before dawn. It’s the very foundation of what is to come, trial before triumph.”

Chamisa said it was puzzling how a political party and members of the security forces could feel threatened by a peace rally.

He also questioned how the police, who turned down their request for a rally arguing that they did not have adequate manpower since they would be covering a Zanu PF rally, suddenly had enough manpower to cordon off the venue on Saturday.

“The conduct shown to the MDC-T by law enforcement authorities erodes and undermines our confidence in them,” he said.
