AUTHOR Basil Chiboyi says in a world shaped by uncertainty, social pressures and shrinking opportunities, his book Plan Before You Start serves as a compass for purposeful living.

“I want people to become proactive thinkers who take ownership of their futures,” he said.

Through his newly-launched book, Plan Before You Start, released last Saturday, the chemical engineering graduate is urging Zimbabwe’s youth to stop waiting for opportunities and instead begin intentionally designing the future they want to create.

The book draws heavily from Chiboyi’s personal journey after graduating from university and struggling to secure employment. Rather than remaining trapped in uncertainty, he chose to chart his own path — a decision that later inspired the central message of his debut publication.

“Success is rarely accidental. Behind every meaningful achievement is planning, preparation, discipline and consistent action,” Chiboyi said.

The author, who founded Grandcrest Horizon (Pvt) Ltd and co-founded Box Nutrition Solutions (Pvt) Ltd, says the book was inspired by his observation of a recurring challenge among young people who often struggle to find direction after completing their studies.

Targeted primarily at students, young entrepreneurs, professionals and emerging leaders, Plan Before You Start promotes planning as a life skill rather than merely a business tool. Chiboyi argues that planning should extend beyond careers and enterprises to include personal growth, finances, relationships, health, leadership development and legacy building.

Structured as a journey from confusion to clarity, the book explores themes such as information overload, purpose discovery, resilience, decision-making and personal responsibility. Chapters including Lost in the Noise, Why Planning Matters, The Power of Small Steps, and Plan It All. Taking ownership of your life encourages readers to adopt a more intentional approach to life.

He warns that many people fall into the trap of waiting for ideal circumstances instead of creating opportunities with the resources available.

Drawing on entrepreneurship lessons gained through education initiatives, STEM programmes and startup ventures, Chiboyi says meaningful success often comes through consistent small actions rather than dramatic breakthroughs.

The book also includes personal stories, among them one inspired by his grandmother, whose commitment to farming and community development left a lasting impression on his understanding of legacy and long-term impact.

For Zimbabwean entrepreneurs operating in a challenging economic environment, Chiboyi believes the principles outlined in the book can improve decision-making, risk management, and long-term thinking.

The launch event attracted young professionals, entrepreneurs, educators and community leaders. During an auction held on the event, the highest bid for a copy reached US$400, while other bids ranged from US$350 to US$200. A standard copy of the book is priced at US$20.

Chiboyi said the publication marked the beginning of the Success and Leadership Foundation Series, a collection of books focusing on leadership, entrepreneurship, personal growth and success principles. He intends to expand his message through school visits, university engagements, mentorship programmes, leadership workshops and youth development initiatives across Zimbabwe.
