This year’s debut edition of the annual “House of Hunger Poetry Slam” will be held tomorrow at the Book Café under the theme “Celebrating Life:
Reflections and Meditations for 2011” in memory of the life and work of prolific writer Julius Chingono, who passed away last Sunday.
Projects Officer (Information and Communication) for Pamberi Trust, Extra-Blessings Kuchera, urged all interested poets to be part of the fiesta.
“This month’ slam will be celebrating life as it were, and making reflections and meditations for 2011. All poets are invited to come and be part of the slam,” he said.
He added that as the first poetry slam this year, it was important to introduce the new year in style, filled with poetic inspiration and vibe.
The “House of Hunger Poetry Slam”, established to recognise one of Zimbabwe finest writers and prolific poet, Dambudzo Marechera provides poets with a platform to showcase their artistic skill before a live audience.
“(It) gives poets a platform to express themselves freely and explicitly through the spoken word and provides a consistent space to practice performance poetry and articulate issues affecting their lives and communities,” Kuchera said.
He expressed regret at the death of Chingono, one of the country’s finest poets whose experience and wisdom was valuable to artists still learning the ropes.
“We would like to hold the slam in his memory and salute his great achievement for poetry in Zimbabwe,” Kuchera said.
The “House of Hunger Poetry Slam” has over the past years brought to the fore some of Zimbabwe’s finest spoken word poets including Ticha Muzavazi, Linda Gabriel, Godobori and Police State Poet.
