Police shift blame in Mutare's death in custody

Police in Mutare who are implicated in the suspected murder of Wilson Sabun are now accusing the deceased’s wife of interfering with their investigations by demanding post mortem results.

The police have also turned on Tendai Mangwiro, a friend of the late Sabun, whom they accuse of pushing the wife Rebecca Musariri, to demand the post mortem and a thorough investigation.

At least two police details are implicated in the suspected murder of Sabun who died in police custody early this year.

The police who initially indicated they would investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Sabun, have begun ducking probes into the progress of their investigations.

They have even gone to the extent of refusing to release post mortem results of the late Sabun to his own wife, a development that has raised suspicion.

The deceased’s friend, Mangwiro, has had to intervene on behalf of the widow by approaching human rights lawyers, government officials and the press in a bid to unravel Sabun’s mysterious death.

Sabun had been on the police wanted list for allegedly impersonating police officers before he was arrested at his home by two officers who allegedly brutally assaulted him as they took him to Mutare Central Police Station and, continued to do so upon arrival. Sabun 37, is said to have collapsed and was taken to Mutare General Hospital where he died a week later.
