Tempers flare over hiked fees

Tempers flared at a School Development Association meeting at Houghton Park Primary School in Waterfalls, Harare, where teachers demanded hefty cash amounts from parents as government has failed to solve the pay dispute.

Parents said the figure in question was too high considering that some of them were civil servants who were also under great pressure to make ends meet.

Teachers and civil servants earn a meagre average monthly income of $150 a month.

“We are struggling to feed our families and some of us have more than one child at that school, and so how are we expected to raise that money,” said one angry parent who preferred anonymity.
