The Zimbabwe Under-19 rugby team will play Uganda today in the semi-finals of the Confederation of African Rugby Cup after they walloped hosts Ivory Coast 45-0 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Monday.
The young Sables are the defending champions of the continental junior rugby tournament. Their opponents Uganda dismissed Kenya 18-0 at the same venue on the same day.
In the other semi-final match, Tunisia who beat Morocco 32-7, will play against Namibia who received a bye after Zambia turned up late for the tournament. The final will be played on Friday. The teams present at the tournament are Namibia, Kenya, Uganda, Morocco, Tunisia, Zambia and hosts Ivory Coast.
The Zimbabwe Under-19 side is coached by District Dragons coach Brighton Chivandire and is largely made up of players who featured at the Junior Rugby World Cup tournament in Russia and a few who featured at the Craven Week Rugby tournament in South Africa last month. Zimbabwe Rugby Union president Themba Sibanda said the performances by the Young Sables showed that Zimbabwean rugby was on the right track as its development structures have been producing quality players.
“Zimbabwean junior rugby is one of the best on the continent and the whole world and we hope they will defend the title. Such performances show that Zimbabwean rugby is on the right track and we should now make sure that we retain these young players so that they feature in the senior national team in the near future,” said Sibanda.
According to reports from the Ivory Coast, the Young Sables who arrived in the West Africa nation on Friday last week were supposed to play their first match on Saturday.
However, the match had to be cancelled after the venue was used for a political rally.
