Adam Wheater’s ton gave title hopefuls Matabeleland Tuskers a first innings lead but Southern Rocks were still battling to save the match in a Castle Logan Cup cricket match at Queens Sports Club on Tuesday.
Wheater’s 126 from 198 balls inspired Tuskers to 365 runs in their first innings which gave them a first innings lead of 126 after Rocks had posted 261 runs.
At stumps yesterday Roy Kaia was still unbeaten on 44 while Chibhabha, who scored a century in the first innings, was also unbeaten on 33 runs as they finished on 81 for one after 35 overs.
Keegan Meth had picked up the only wicket to fall yesterday when he clean-bowled Steve Marillier for just two runs in the fourth over but Kaia and Chibhabha fought back with an unbeaten 77 run second wicket partnership stand.
Rocks were still 23 runs behind and the match now looks headed for a draw with only one day of play remaining unless the Tuskers’ bowlers brew something special on Wednesday.
The seam trio of Njabulo Ncube, Meth and Tawanda Mpariwa was in devastating form in Rocks’ first innings when they took three wickets apiece to dismiss them for 261 runs.
If Tuskers are going to come out with a victory after the close of play today then the above mentioned trio will have to replicate their performance.
Southern Rocks have not won a match in the Logan Cup since they came into existence with the revamping of the domestic structures last season.
Tuskers on the other hand need to win this match to remain in contention of a place in the final after they were displaced to third on the log by Mid West Rhinos who wrapped up an innings win over Mashonaland Eagles inside three days on Tuesday.
