A Chiredzi toddler was tied to a donkey’s neck by an as yet unknown person and died after being dragged for kilometres by the panicked beast of burden.
The incident has left the local community shocked and baying for the blood of the culprit.
Two-year-old Kholwani Vhoko, of Makhosiya village, under Chief Sengwe in the Lowveld, died on January 4 when an as yet unknown person put a leash around his neck and tied him to the donkey’s neck.
The victim’s mother Juliet Takavarasha (23) had left the toddler home in the company of his brother, Vincent , aged six, as she went to the field for weeding at around 6am.
The deceased’s body was discovered by a local villager, Gibson Shoko, who rushed to alert Takavarasha, who then made a police report.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tinaye Matake confirmed the incident, saying a manhunt has been launched for the suspect.
“Investigations are underway and we are appealing to members of the public to assist us with any information that will lead to the arrest of the suspect,” Matake said.
He warned members of the public not to leave their children unattended.
