As the nation gears up for Christmas celebrations on Saturday, NewsDay Arts Writer Melissa Mpofu sounded out some of the local celebrities on their festive season itinerary. Here are their plans:
Munyaradzi Chidzonga, Zim’s Big Brother Africa 3 representative
Munya and wife, Adeona Maboreke, who is also a 2008 Idols East Africa top 10 finalist, said they will be travelling out of Harare for some quality family time away from the capital’s madding crowds.
“We have booked at a beautiful place in a town out of Harare to spend our Christmas and we will be back before New Year. We decided to spend Christmas in Zimbabwe with our son because this is our country that we are proud off,” said Adeona.
Sam Mataure, professional drummer and music promoter
One of the country’s finest artists, Sam Mataure, said for him, there was no festive season break. He will be part of Oliver Mtukudzi and the Black Spirits who have a jam-packed festive season diary.
“For us there is no Christmas break, really. Thursday night we were at Pakare Paye (for the Spar Solo Fest) and today we’re leaving for Dubai, where we will perform tomorrow night and on Christmas Day,” he said. “Then the next day (Christmas), we will leave for Durban for another performance on December 26.”
He added that they would return the following day ahead of a solo performance by Tuku at Humana People to People in Shamva.
Samantha Tshuma, Miss Tourism Zimbabwe
The beauty queen is traveling to Bulawayo, her home town, where she will visit all hospitals and give presents to the sick during Christmas. She added that she was going to have lunch with the children at Mpilo Hospital, where she was also born. For her, Christmas is always the same and she does not expect it to be any different from other years.
Willis Wataffi, afro-jazz artist
Wataffi will spend Christmas with his family in Bulawayo. He said he was glad that, unlike many other musicians, he would take time off from an otherwise hectic work schedule just to relax and unwind this Christmas season.
“This year’s Christmas is definitely going to be better because I will be home sitting by the Christmas tree, opening presents with those I love the most,” said the Qaya music artist.
Enock Munhenga aka X-q, urban groover
Urban groover X-q will be spending his Christmas in Nyanga with his wife and close friends. They will be in the resort town till New Year. The musician said this year had been a successful one as he managed to realise some profits from his live performances and CD sales.
