A Harare policeman who was convicted of raping a 14-year old girl Tuesday sought to remind the magistrate of a biblical verse which calls for forgiveness among human beings.
Promise Njanji pleaded with the court for leniency and read a quotation from the Bible in Matthew Chapter 6 verse 14-15 before regional magistrate Simon Rogers Kachambwa slapped him with a 20-year jail term.
“Your Worship, let me read to you a Bible verse from Matthew 6 verse 14-15 which says if you forgive others you shall also be forgiven,” Njanji said after the court allowed him to read from the Bible.
However Kachambwa quickly reminded Njanji that he had been convicted of a very serious offence especially taking into account that he was a police officer.
“You took advantage of being a police officer and forced yourself on the minor who looked up to you for protection. If indeed you wanted to assist the young girl you should have sought assistance from female police officers.
“You took the girl into your house, locked the door, hid the keys and raped her. Such behaviour is beastly to say the least,” Kachambwa said.
The magistrate said cases of rape, especially perpetrated on minors, were on the increase and as such, the courts were called upon to impose stiffer penalties.
After sentencing Njanji to a 20-year jail term, Kachambwa suspended six years for five years on condition that the cop did not commit an offence of a sexual nature.
Njanji will serve an effective 14-year prison term with hard labour.
