Shabanie Mine thumped Kiglon in a Premiership soccer match played at Maglas Stadium — a result that saved coach John Phiri’s job.

Phiri’s job was on the firing line and was ordered to do away with most of his trusted lieutenants or risk his job by the club management. Artwell Nyoni struck in the sixth minute, Michael Mageja added the second in the 17th minute before skipper Tafadzwa Mombeshora ensured a 3-1 cushion going into the breather.

Nyoni completed his brace on the hour while Mageja added his second at the end of the game while Thomas Magorimbo’s strike a minute before halftime proved to be their consolation goal.

After the match Kiglon assistant coach Masimba Dinyero blasted the referees for the loss.

”I am not happy with the officiating at all and this killed the tempo of our game. Zimbabwean football is going down the drain.”

A relieved Phiri said: “I am happy with the form of my boys and I hope they will maintain it. I want a top four finish and I no longer have automatic players for any game.

They (senior players) must wake up as competition is now very strong.” The hosts hit the target in the sixth minute through Nyoni when a throw-in from former Underhill player Smart Muchabayiwa was flicked on by Tafadzwa Mombeshora to John Tarunga.

Tarunga played a quick cross to Nyoni whose firm header sailed past Phillip Nhete in goal for the visitors. The scorer was then brought down in the box by defender Gift Bello in 17th minute and Mageja sent Nhete the wrong way from the spot.

Kiglon skipper Magorimbo pulled one back for the visitors after Washington Pakamisa was brought down at the edge of the box. Magorimbo’s curler eluded Shabanie Mine goalkeeper Roy Mazingi to settle in the nets.

Just when Kiglon thought they had reduced the arrears, Shabanie hit back 60 seconds later with Mombeshora heading home a Mageja free kick.

Nyoni completed his brace on the hour before Mageja completed the 5-1 rout in the 90th minute.
