Hwange hold champions Gunners

Gunners hitman Norman Maroto struck a late equaliser as the defending champions dropped points in the title race against Hwange in a Premiership match played at the Colliery Stadium Sunday.

Everything was pointing to a Hwange victory after Nkosana Siwela had given the coal miners an 18th minute lead until Maroto headed home a corner in the 87th minute for a share of the spoils.

Gunners are fifth with 35 points with Hwange a rung and a point below.

Hwange coach Tennant Chilumba paid tribute to Gunners for their fighting spirit.

“They really fought hard and were rewarded with a share of points and my boys were punished for the lapse in concentration, though the result is not bad for us as we will continue to fight to the bitter end,” he said.

Chipangano had a bright start to the match and threatened Gunners as early as the fifth minute when goal scorer Siwela combined with Rodwell Chinyengetere who produced arguably his best performance in Chipangano colours before the latter’s sizzling grounder was parried for a corner by Tafadzwa Dube.

“Chando Kupisa” then came out of their shell in moments later with a swift counter on the left flank but Tapiwa Mangezi missed a sitter with the goalkeeper to beat after a lovely cross by Masakusi eluded the Hwange defence.

The coal miners then raced into the lead in the 18th minute after Siwela had the easiest task of pushing the ball into an empty net when he connected a sitter from Gilbert Zulu who had turned Pardon Chinungwa inside out deep in the Gunners box before laying for Siwela.

Realising that his lengthy 770 km journey from Harare could end in a disaster, Dodo dragged out Mangezi for Nathan Ziwini as early as the 30th minute, and the replacement didn’t disappoint as he started orchestrating the visitors’ raids.

For all their sweating the reward came three minutes from the end when Andrew Tshuma conceded the corner kick and Maroto broke the home fans’ hearts with the late equaliser.
