Court grants doctors $200 bail each

Five American and Zimbabwean doctors who were arrested at the weekend for allegedly operating a clinic and distributing Antiretroviral (ARVs) drugs without permit from the Medical Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) have been granted $200 bail each and ordered to surrender their passports.

Gloria Con Crowell (48), Reid Andrew John Cheney (49), Antony Eugene Jones (39), Gregory Renard Miller (64), David Greenberg (62) and Tembinkosi Nkomanzi (37) appeared before Harare magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi Monday.

Their lawyer Jonathan Samkange told journalists after they were released on bail that his clients were being persecuted even though they were rendering assistance to the needy sick Zimbabweans.

“In fact, my clients are being persecuted for doing good work and their faith is being tested just like Jesus Christ. He was crucified after doing good things to people,” Samkange said.

Samkange said the Zimbabwean doctor was arrested treating her patients while the American doctors were mere observers after they had sourced ARVs for needy Zimbabweans.
