Bulawayo residents excavate storm drains

Bulawayo’s Emganwini (Ward 26) community has taken a step in demonstrating community responsibility by recently embarking on a storm drainage excavation exercise in their area.
This action became necessary after several houses in the area were inundated by flood waters two months ago.
Contractors who were engaged by the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) to erect houses in the area did not construct the required storm drainage. BCC working with a local non-governmental organisation, the Zimbabwe Development Democracy Trust (ZDDT) assisted the residents with tools and protective clothing. The area Councillor Norman Hlabani said in an interview that the residents took up the challenge. “When we sought funds from the local authority, they informed us that they had no finances,” said Hlabani. “We thought it best to do the work ourselves. However, the local authority assisted us by providing the specific guidelines to be followed in carrying out the task and we have almost completed the project,” he said. Hlabani added that the residents were going to spearhead other projects.
“The next community exercise which will also be tackled by the residents will be pothole filling. We hope that the local authority and ZDDT will be there to assist us again,” he said.
