Prosecutors in Mutare have declined to charge two women arrested for participating in a Women of Zimbabwe Arise (Woza) demonstration.
Sibongile Mapute(46) and Rose Rikoyo (48) were arrested a day after taking part in a demonstration and spent the night in police cells at Mutare Central Police Station. Both women are from Sakubva high density suburb.
They did not appear in court because prosecutors said there wasn’t sufficient evidence against them. Human rights lawyers say the women were arrested after the police conducted a door to door search for the protestors.
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights acting programmes’ coordinator in Mutare Blessing Nyamaropa said after a peaceful demonstration by Woza women in Mutare February 16 police tracked the protestors to their houses.
