South African football legend Jomo Sono on Sunday heaped praises on Highlanders for their type of play as he watched them beat Motor Action 2-1 in a Castle Lager Premiership match at Barbourfields Stadium.

Sono, the owner of National First Division One side Jomo Cosmos, said he was impressed by the championship contenders. Bosso look set to land the championship, which they last won in 2006 under the mentorship of Methembe “Mayor” Ndlovu, and on Sunday reached their 20th-match unbeaten mark in the 2012 season under the guidance of former Zambia national team striker Kelvin Kaindu.

Kaindu seems to have changed the fortunes of the Bulawayo giants although defending champions Dynamos are mounting strong pressure on Bosso after dismissing Gunners 4-0 at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday. Sono said he was impressed by Bosso, especially in midfield and upfront, but had reservations over the backline, which was rather unstable on Sunday.

“I am very much impressed with how Highlanders are playing, especially in the centre and the strike force. They are playing brilliant football, but the defence is rather shaky and the other team could have scored more goals,” Sono said.

Sono said he was on holiday, but there was a player that he had come to watch and he would soon be holding talks with the Highlanders executive.

Bosso last year forged a partnership with Jomo Cosmos, which will see the two teams exchange players.

It was the mobility of right-back Bruce Tshuma from the outset of the game, who combined well with Peter “Rio” Moyo and Masimba Mambare to destabilise the Motor Action defence and earn Highlanders the two early goals to collect maximum points. The build-ups, with well-executed exchange of passes, resulted in a beautiful cross from Tshuma in the eighth minute, which found Bhekimpilo Ncube ready to beat Marlon Jani to put Bosso in the lead.

Under pressure, Mighty Bulls central defender Morris Kadzola attempted a back-pass to Jani a few minutes later and felled an advancing Beaven Chikaka from behind and Bosso were awarded a penalty, converted by goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda in the 13th minute.

Motor Action had a chance of coming back into the game, but Yves Ebabali Esisa’s header went off target in the 24th minute after he was set up by Fortune Ncube as former Bosso midfielder Protasho Kabwe exposed the hosts’ defence, with skipper Innocent Mapuranga having a bad day in the office. Merciful Ncube’s header in the 41st minute was brilliantly saved by Ariel before Ebabali connected the rebound, but was off-target.
