Zimbabwean tech startup launches digital loadboard for southern African road freight logistics

HARARE, July 13 (NewsDay Live) -Zimbabwean technological startup AfroFleet recently launched a digital marketplace aimed at transforming the highly fragmented road freight sector across southern Africa.

By transitioning logistics away from traditional phone calls, brokers and messy spreadsheets, the platform creates a centralised, verified online ecosystem for the region's shipping needs.

The platform operates as a comprehensive digital loadboard connecting businesses requiring freight services directly with transport operators.

Load owners can post cargo details, including weight, trailer type and payment terms, in minutes, while transporters browse these public listings using advanced radius filters, a table view, or a geographic map view powered by Google Places.

Once carriers are verified, they can instantly bid the listed rate or counter-offer with their own pricing and subsequently assign specific trucks, trailers and drivers to the shipment in a single click.

To streamline execution, AfroFleet integrates with telematics partners to provide real-time location mapping and automated ETA updates, eliminating manual check-ins.

The platform also features automated WhatsApp alerts, pre-filled order details and email notifications to maintain smooth communication.

Furthermore, the system includes secure document management, allowing carriers to generate truck-pack PDFs for drivers and upload signed proof of delivery documents, which automatically locks in an audit trail for rapid invoicing.

By prioritising transparency and resource optimisation, the platform directly addresses long-standing industry inefficiencies.

Trust is placed at the center of operations, as every transporter undergoes strict vetting to receive a unique AfroFleet ID.

This gives stakeholders public, verifiable access to valid operator licenses, cross-border permits, tax clearances and insurance data that typically gets misplaced in gloveboxes.

Consequently, load owners benefit from guaranteed transparent market rates, vetted carriers and live visibility from pickup to delivery.

For load carriers, ranging from large transport fleets to independent owner-operators, the platform severely cuts down on empty return trips, levels the playing field against larger competitors and ensures faster payment turnarounds.

Beyond commercial logistics, AfroFleet serves as a vital tool for government ministries and industry regulators focused on cross-border trade efficiency and transport-sector formalisation.

By archiving a digital record of regional freight flows, the marketplace actively encourages regulatory compliance rather than avoiding it.

AfroFleet says it plans to scale its coverage across eastern and west African corridors, aiming to evolve into the continent's digital logistics backbone by rolling out open APIs for corporate ERP systems, mobile-first features for drivers and AI-assisted route optimisation.
