AMHVoices:Independence meaningless with repressive govt

We fought against a bad system, not a race, so any system, which seeks to abuse its powers must be challenged, as it is counter-revolutionary and dangerous for our national progress and building.

It is that time of the year again — the period or month people of Zimbabwe celebrate their hard-won independence that came through the ultimate sacrifice of our ancestors, brothers and sisters who took up arms to fight a stubborn racist regime.

We fought against a bad system, not a race, so any system, which seeks to abuse its powers must be challenged, as it is counter-revolutionary and dangerous for our national progress and building.

Zanu PF has proved to be one such system, catering for the party bosses and their close associates at the expense of the povo.

Of importance is the need to highlight that the struggle to emancipate the country from the clutches of colonialism and imperialism did not start with the current crop of Zanu PF leadership, which has perfected its own form of oppression and repression. History traces the struggle for our nationhood from the 1890s with King Lobengula leading the struggle from Bulawayo, the City of Kings, and Mbuya Nehanda, Kaguvi, Mapondera etc from Mashonaland.

So independence came through the sacrifice of many generations. With or without Zanu PF, independence was going to come anyway. It was only that in 1980 Zanu PF and President Robert Mugabe were at the right place at the right time.

Apart from that, we owe Zanu PF nothing when it comes to our national independence as they did not initiate the struggle, but simply joined it.

Instead, they have to explain to the nation why after 36 years of failed Zanu PF policies we are a begging nation.

Our war of independence and liberation was neither about substituting a colonial regime with a Zanu PF dictatorship nor a dynasty in whatever form. It was a fight to bring total or unlimited independence. Our independence must not be conditional.

Opposition political parties and their leaders must be free to interact and mix with citizens without fear of the unknown and intimidation from Zanu PF elements or any overzealous security agents. There must be unfettered access to ordinary people.

Zimbabweans as, we prepare to celebrate our 36th independence anniversary, it is important to remind each other that our country is in trouble because Zanu PF hijacked our destiny as a people.

There is a lot to gain by making sure Zanu PF loses the next poll. Is there any people or nation who feast and live on promises only? That way, independence, freedom and equality will be realised.
