Rising young tennis star Nicole Dzenga was the only player to book a place in the final of her age group on the penultimate day of the ITF/CAT Southern Africa Zonal Junior Championships at Harare Sports Club on Friday.
First seed Dzenga will on Saturday meet Louise-Marie Botes of South Africa in the final of girls’ Under 14 category after a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jackinah Rakotohasy of Madagascar on Friday.
Botes who is seeded third in the tournament had beaten fourth seed Namibian Sedi Jacobs 6-2, 7-5 to book her place in the final.
It was however misery for the other local players after they were knocked out in the semi-finals of the tournament on Friday after a promising run throughout the tournament.
The two Zimbabwean finalists in the boys’ Under 14 Ngoni Chiwetete and Tadiwa Chinamo lost their semi-final matches.
South Africa-based Valeria Bhunu who was seeded first was a hot favourite against South Africa’s third seed Ilze Hattingh. She would go on to brew a shocker when the two went to the court.
The first set between the two went to the wire but Hattingh won it 7-6 before sealing the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set to complete a straight sets win.
