Zimbabwe Sevens Rugby team, the Cheetahs failed to produce good results when they were humiliated 59-0 by New Zealand in their second 2010 Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens tournament on Friday.
But they will play the Arabian Gulf in the semi-finals of the Bowl title, despite the two losses in the group stages.
The Cheetahs, who were in a tough group embracing the champions New Zealand, USA and Argentina, registered a good start to the tournament after beating Argentina 24-14 in their first match before they suffered a huge loss to New Zealand.
Tries from Njabulo Ndlovu, Tangai Nemadire and two from Wesley Mbanje gave head coach Liam Middleton a perfect start.
Toby Arnold scored twice as the defending Dubai champions, New Zealand, recorded a 31-7 victory over USA in their opening pool match.
Having recently scooped a fourth successive Commonwealth Games gold medal, they start as favourites for this tournament and Gordon Tietjens’ new-look squad scored a further three tries through Declan O’Donnell, Frank Halai and Bryce Heem.
In the last match of the group against USA, which gave the impression of being a balanced match for both teams, the game went to USA with a 28-12 defeat for the Cheetahs who failed to win vital balls.
Middleton, who had set his sights high for the outing to the Sevens World Series saw his side failing to make imperative tackles, though Wesley Mbanje showed his best by trying to stop the opponents from realising a glut of tries.
New Zealand finished on top of the group with nine points, USA on second with seven and Zimbabwe in third position with five points while Argentina was last on three.
