Soldier beats pregnant wife over mango

A heavily pregnant woman was badly beaten up by her jealous husband for taking too long to return home after she went to buy a mango in Harare’s Tynwald South.

Witnesses said the soldier shouted abuse at his wife. He accused her of infidelity before attacking her. She fled from the scene. Neighbours said the woman begged them not to intervene or call the police.

“Look I am pregnant. Where do I go if he chases me away? Worse still, what if he beats me and ends my life. Will I get protection or another baby from the newspaper or from the police?” asked the woman when she was visited by Newsday. She did not want her identity revealed.

The battered woman said her abusive husband was previously married to her aunt, who died last year.

“He insults and beats me up even when a man passing by looks at me. Go and talk to him please,” pleaded the woman.

Police spokesperson Inspector Andrew Sabau said men and women should not hesitate reporting domestic violence.
