The school, along Seke Road, will enrol an estimated 1 080 students.
Speaking at the ceremony, United Family International Church spokesperson, Prime Kufa said the project was part of Ruth’s philanthropic deeds to edify Zimbabwe.
“This is part of her (Ruth) vision that is being fulfilled here, to help the society she comes from, and help the students of Sunningdale, who were enduring long walks to go and seek education elsewhere,” he said.
Kufa said the institution would be named Ruthdale High School.
The project is an extension of the Agape Family Care, a programme that has seen more than 3 000 scholarships being offered to underprivileged children under the Ruth Makandiwa Scholarship Foundation.
Ward 10 councillor, Hammy Madzingira challenged other churches and the corporate world to emulate the Makandiwas.

“For long, our children were suffering having to endure long distances to go to secondary school in other places. This work is important and other organisations out there should draw a lesson from it,” he said.
Land to construct a secondary school in Sunningdale was earmarked in 1984, but since then, the government has failed to bring this proposed development to fruition.
Sunningdale secondary school pupils have been enduring going long, arduous distances to attend school, mainly in Mbare and Cranborne.
