Gokwe-Kabuyuni MP and MDC-T Midlands North chairperson Costin Muguti appeared in court yesterday facing a culpable homicide charge for allegedly killing a 16-year-old boy in a suspected hit-and-run accident.

Muguti’s lawyer Reginald Chidawanyika said his client was arrested last Thursday in connection with the suspected hit-and-run accident that occurred early this month at Hovano Secondary School just outside Gokwe town centre along the Kwekwe-Gokwe Highway.

Gokwe magistrate Stabile Sibafa remanded him in custody to today. The MDC-T MP, who has been held at Gokwe Central Police Station since his arrest, was also being charged with driving without a licence and failing to report an accident within 24 hours.

The State alleged that after knocking down the pupil killing him instantly, Muguti reportedly failed to stop or report the accident to the police.

Muguti is no stranger to prison life after he languished in remand prison for two months early this year on allegations of threatening to kill Chief Samuel Samambwa of Zhombe.

Earlier, he had also been arrested in Kadoma on a public violence charge, but the case was later withdrawn before plea after the State witnesses failed to attend the court case.
