The groups, which are set to fight for the sole ticket to represent the province at the national finals, are three Mutare groups Dhuma Tasangana, Echoes Arts Group and Manicaland Schools of Arts all from the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS).

A traditional dance stronghold in the province, Chipinge is providing the largest number of groups which include Holland Nyaututwa, Maronga, Paiyapo and guest group Chivaraidze which won last year’s event that was also held in Chipinge.

Other groups expected at the Delta Beverages-sponsored event are Mudhara from Penhalonga, Maugwe from Makoni, Changazi and Bangwe all from Chimanimani. Winners of the event will walk away with $500, second runner-up will get $300, while third position will receive $200.

In an interview yesterday, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) Manicaland provincial manager Jonah Muchayi said they were expecting a bumper crowd at Dzonzayi complex since Chipinge was the ceremonial home of traditional dance in the province.

“We always host our provincial finals in Chipinge because it is the catchment area and ceremonial home of traditional dance in the province. So we are expecting a big crowd just like we had last year in Chipinge,” he said.

“As NACZ, we facilitate and organise the event, while Delta is our proud sponsor and the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dance Association co-ordinate the event. Winners are set to represent the province at the national finals in Harare, but we are yet to be given the dates.”
