Harare finds its winter flame

Life & Style

THE crackling glow of towering flames, pulsating Afro-house rhythms and an all-star cast transformed Harare's winter chill into a celebration of music, culture and community as the Mighty Zambezi Lager Bonfire Festival made a triumphant return to Donnybrook Park on Saturday.

Back after a four-year hiatus, the flagship winter entertainment showcase lived up to expectations, drawing thousands of revellers for nearly 14 hours of live performances, immersive experiences and Zimbabwean hospitality.

The festival featured some of Zimbabwe's biggest musical acts, with ExQ, Tamy Moyo, Takura, Samuel Cosmic, Kotwane Hikwa, DJ Tino, Whalrey, DJ Klique and the Djembe Monks delivering energetic performances from afternoon until the early hours of yesterday.

Rather than simply entertaining, each act appeared determined to outshine the next, producing a seamless procession of high-energy performances that elevated the overall spectacle.

Hosted by Star FM's DJ Mox and Capitalk FM presenter Butterfly, the event gradually gathered momentum from midday as corporate guests and music lovers streamed into the venue. By nightfall, Donnybrook Park had transformed into a vibrant entertainment village.

As temperatures dropped, Fire Marshals ignited more than 100 fire buckets while crews prepared the festival's signature giant bonfire, providing warmth and creating a dramatic centrepiece that drew cheering crowds. Well-branded hospitality areas, food courts, gaming zones and beverage outlets ensured patrons enjoyed a complete festival experience beyond the music.

The Djembe Monks embodied the festival's spirit by blending Afro-house music with traditional percussion.

"We're excited that the Bonfire Festival is back because this is what makes us who we are. Music brings people together from different places to gather around the fire, share a common identity and experience a spiritual connection," said Emmanuel of the Djembe Monks.

Bulawayo-based producer and DJ Kotwane Hikwa described the invitation as a career milestone.

"It is an honour to represent Bulawayo on this stage. I always prepare for every kind of audience, but tonight I found people who genuinely connected with my music, and that made the performance special," he said.

Innovative percussionist Whalrey, whose captivating fusion of marimba, ngoma and Afro-house rhythms distinguished his performance, explained the philosophy behind his unique stage presentation.

"I fuse Zimbabwean percussion instruments with Afro-house. I carefully prepare and sequence every performance beforehand, so on stage I focus entirely on expressing the music through live percussion," he said.

His intricate rhythms, layered over electronic beats, became one of the evening's standout performances, demonstrating how traditional Zimbabwean instruments continue to find new audiences through contemporary music.

Bulawayo DJ TJ Tino summed up the festival's atmosphere with characteristic humour.

"I'm here because it's cold, but the music, the people and the Zambezi Lager bring all the warmth we need."

The evening's headline performers ensured the festival ended on a high. Tamy Moyo delivered one of the night's most energetic sets, keeping fans dancing throughout her performance. Takura showcased both his hard-edged stage persona and his softer romantic catalogue, while ExQ capped the night with a polished, crowd-pleasing performance that drew loud singalongs from the audience.

First introduced as Zimbabwe's premier winter lifestyle event, the Zambezi Lager Bonfire Festival has become synonymous with live music, braais, camping, outdoor entertainment and Zimbabwe's social calendar. Its return after four years reinforced its place as one of the country's flagship lifestyle events, blending premium entertainment with cultural celebration and the Zambezi Lager brand experience.
