In Zimbabwe’s fast-evolving entertainment landscape — where live music, festivals and faith-based gatherings demand world-class production — sound is no longer a background element; it is the experience. At the centre of this sonic shift is Hardsound Systems, a company steadily building a reputation for reliability, innovation and technical excellence.
NewsDay Life & Style journalist Tendai Sauta (ND) sits down with Hardsound Systems chief executive officer Ephraim Rateiwa (ER) to discuss the company’s journey, its home-grown innovations and ambitions to meet both local and regional demand.
ND: Ephraim, thank you for speaking with us. Can you tell us about yourself and your role at Hardsound Systems?
ER: Thank you, Tendai. I am Ephraim Rateiwa, founder and CEO of Hardsound Systems. My role is both strategic and operational — overseeing day-to-day activities, managing client relationships and guiding the company’s long-term vision. My background in sound engineering and passion for live entertainment continue to shape the business.
ND: Hardsound Systems has been operating for some time. What inspired its founding and growth?
ER: The company began as a modest setup driven by a passion for music and quality sound. Initially, we serviced small local events. Through consistency, reinvestment and a focus on reliability, we expanded into larger productions. Over time, this approach helped establish our reputation in the industry.
ND: Zimbabwe’s music industry is growing. How has Hardsound adapted, and what opportunities do you see?
ER: We have responded by upgrading equipment, adopting new technologies and aligning with evolving client needs. The growth of live shows and festivals presents strong opportunities for high-quality production services, particularly as audience and artist expectations rise.
