As Zimbabwe increasingly becomes a hit spot with foreign artistes and DJs, its lure has reached as far as the US, and an American DJ, D-rock, real name Andrew Khanye, will on Saturday evening launch his second album, Life of a DJ, at Stars Nite Club in Harare.
D-rock, who arrived in Zimbabwe last week, will be backed by Andile and Manfredmash from South Africa and the local crew of DJs L-Roy, Dee-nosh, TK Beats and Blaze.
This will be the first time for Stars to play host to a contingent of international DJs at the same time during an album launch.
The US DJ, who got an opportunity to spend time in Victoria Falls, will however fly out Sunday.
The wheel spinner performed in Zimbabwe during a music festival in 2002.
But this will be his first time to do an album launch in the country.
The house DJ is currently on a continental tour during which he is promoting the Patron Tequila brand.
Stars Nightclub will be the last leg of this tour in Africa after playing in South Africa, Namibia, Malaysia, United Kingdom, Canada and Zambia.
D-rock was born in South Africa 26 years ago and his musical journey began in 2000.
He started as a resident disc jockey then later played at upmarket clubs, parties and festivals.
In an interview, D-rock said his name represented his real name and the the ‘rock’ in his name came from the comment: “D, you rock man”.
He is a consummate music mixer player.
He said: “I can play a full house set or I can do what I do with most of my sets which is called mash-ups.
This is where I don’t play one particular genre, but play hip-hop, R&B and dancehall in one set in a style different to most,” he said.
He added that he plays on three decks and this gives him more power behind the wheels of steel.
D-rock has two compilations, one called Gossip the Nite and Life of a DJ.
He said the first compilation was released in 2008 and the second was in the process of being released.
He promised fans who will attend the event on Saturday that he will deliver the best and they will not be short-changed.
“All I can say is that I deliver, so guys, fireworks is what I have in my magic bag,” said D-rock.
