The curtain comes down on the Harare Under-17 and U-19 Provincial Rugby Trials with some exciting matches lined up at Gateway High School. The two-day provincial trials kicked off yesterday with aspiring young players from different schools in the capital showcasing their talent in front of selectors.

Today sees the culmination of the selection tournament, but not before the province’s powerhouses collide in what promise to be bruising encounters.

The main match will see St George’s, who are yet to taste defeat this season, square off against their bitter rivals St John’s College.

Earlier Prince Edward, who had a disappointing campaign at the just ended Cottco Schools rugby festival, will be hoping for a change of fortunes against a well- drilled Churchill team which will also be eager to upstage their rivals.

Meanwhile in some of the matches played yesterday, Eaglesvale’s second team beat Lord Malvern High School 10-0 in the first match of the Under-19 trials.

Eaglesvale, whose first team plays hosts Gateway today, were brought into the programme as a last-minute replacement for Marlborough who arrived at the trials late.

In the other match in the Under-19 category St John’s Emerald Hill drew five-all against Cranborne while in the Under-16 category Mbare drew 10-10 against Ellis Robins.

The provincial trials will culminate in the selection of two provincial Under-17 and U-19 age group teams who will then go to the national trials set for Peterhouse College on May 25-26.

At the national trials two teams will be selected to represent the country in the Under-17 and U-19 age groups at this year’s Coca-Cola Craven Week tournament which will be hosted by Eastern Province Rugby Union at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, South Africa, from July 8-14.
