Zimbabwe baseball Names bloated African Championship squad

The Zimbabwe Baseball Association has released a 37-man shortlist for a national team camp scheduled from June 5 to 7 at Dream Park, with the gathering serving as a crucial selection exercise ahead of the upcoming African Championship in South Africa.

The camp, which will whittle down the current shortlist to a final squad that will travel to South Africa, has been organised by a technical team comprising head coach Americo Kuma, Vice President Technical Mubuso Zebedee Matanga and team manager Winmore Mubariri, a combination of experience and expertise that underlines the association's serious approach to the continental assignment.

The shortlist boasts impressive national spread, drawing talent from Manicaland, Bulawayo, Midlands, Harare, Masvingo and Mashonaland West, alongside a contingent of foreign-based players, reflecting the growing reach and depth of Zimbabwean baseball across the country and beyond its borders.

Manicaland contribute six players including Ropes Gavaneni, Brian Muropa and Tinotenda Satoro, while Bulawayo provide seven players among them Thabo Ncube, Ashton Chivizhe and Simbarashe Chikaonda. The Harare contingent is the largest, featuring players such as Tanyaradzwa Hungwe, Wayne Mabvira, Shingirai Katsande and Tinashe Kwangwari among others.

The foreign-based contingent of four players, Tadiwa Bhasera, Chris Muchavurawa, Langton Zhuwawo and Albert Mukandla adds valuable international exposure to the squad.

For a programme that recently soared 31 positions in the WBSC Baseball5 World Rankings, the African Championship represents another critical step in Zimbabwe's growing continental ambitions.
