Caps United face tough Easter test

Makepekepe, under new coach Takesure Chiragwi, are relentless in pursuit of their first league title since 2016.

LOG leaders Caps United will be looking to protect their unbeaten run when the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League resumes after the international break with a bumper Easter fixture programme.

Makepekepe, under new coach Takesure Chiragwi, are relentless in pursuit of their first league title since 2016.

Having won all four opening matches, they have already opened a four-point lead at the top of the standings.

While it’s early to draw conclusions, their lead over pre-season favourites already speaks volumes about their pedigree.

The race behind them is tight. Four teams — defending champions Scottland, Dynamos, Simba Bhora, and Ngezi Platinum Stars — are all level on eight points.

However, Caps United’s early-season dominance faces its toughest test yet when they travel to Baobab Stadium tomorrow to take on unbeaten Ngezi Platinum Stars. While victories over Agama (2-1), Hardrock (2-0), Triangle (1-0), and Herentals (1-0) have showcased their winning form, the Green Machine has arguably yet to encounter a genuine challenge.

Ngezi, renowned for playing some of the most attractive football in the country, promise exactly that stern test.

A win for Chiragwi’s side in Mhondoro would send a powerful statement to the rest of the league.

Elsewhere, the spotlight falls on the City of Kings and Queens. Winless Highlanders face a season-defining Good Friday clash with FC Platinum at Barbourfields Stadium. The stakes could not be higher for new coach Benjani Mwaruwari, whose tenure began with four consecutive draws. Failure to secure maximum points against the Zvishavane-based side could prove costly, particularly with a daunting trip to Harare to face reigning champions Scottland just three days later. Mwaruwari must be scratching his head.

At the opposite end of the table, the situation is becoming dire. Manica Diamonds and Triangle United are yet to register a point this season and face Agama and Chicken Inn, respectively, in a desperate bid to kickstart their campaigns. Hunters also remain in search of their first win.

With a heavily congested Easter schedule, squad depth could prove decisive. For the league leaders, it is a chance to pull further ahead; for the strugglers, a frantic scramble for survival. One thing is certain: by the time the Easter eggs are finished, the Premier Soccer League table will look very different.
