Comedy, music, film and more this weekend, giving people no excuse for staying indoors

HARARE residents looking to make the most of the weekend have even more options beyond the Africa Day festivities, with a packed schedule of homegrown entertainment that started running across the city from yesterday through tonight and tomorrow.

Last night kicked off the extended weekend on a high note as Growth Point Studios brought New School Comedy to Moto Republik on 3 Allan Wilson Avenue in Greater Avenues.

The show, which started at 7pm, featured an impressive roster of local comedic talent, including Mike, Chipenzi, Patricia, Tino, Josh, Hupenyu, Trust, David, Tinashe, Tafadzwa and Neville.

Entry was pegged at a wallet friendly US$5, with a corkage fee of US$10 for those who brought their own drinks.

Today, Saturday, the entertainment continues on multiple fronts with something for virtually every taste.

Music lovers with a nostalgic streak can head to a secret backyard location for Sofar Sounds: A 90s Retro Concert, organised by Sofar Harare.

Running from 3pm, the afternoon concert promises R&B and 90s hits with a touch of Urban Grooves, and a surprise artist flying in from Paris.

Tickets are priced at US$10 and are available on sofarsounds.com.

Also this afternoon, Moto Republik plays host again as Harare Open Mic returns from 2pm to 5pm, featuring poetry and music with guest artists Cynthia Flowchyld Marangwanda and Tinofireyi Aero5ol Zhou.

At Studio Moto on 3 Downie Avenue in Belgravia, the Bokola Festival 2026 runs from 12pm to 7pm.

The festival screens a selection of local and international films, headlined by Hold The Line: Between Collapse and Becoming, and also features a Kidz Zone, exhibitions and live music.

Entry is priced at just US$1, making it one of the most accessible cultural offerings of the weekend.

For those who prefer the great outdoors, Eden Place on Guildford Drive in Brookeview is hosting an Outdoor Movie Night in partnership with ZiFM Stereo’s Love Lounge.

Starting at 7pm, the screening features the film You Me and Tuscany.

The set-up includes mbaura, cushions and carpets, with food on sale including marshmallows to roast, popcorn, burgers, chips, drinks and hotdogs.

Entrance is US$10 per person and attendees are encouraged to bring a fleece or blanket for warmth. Bookings can be made on +263 714 269 900.

Also running today on 12 Maasdorp Avenue in Belgravia, Fabrik Party Lab and Store hosts Electric Townships from 3pm to 5pm.

The listening session, presented by Kem.bo in partnership with Fabrik Party Lab and Store, is an exploration of 1970s Zimbabwean rock music. Tickets are US$10.

Rounding off the afternoon and carrying the energy into the night, the Bokola Festival Official After Party, titled On Fire, takes over The Dome at Moto Republik from 6pm to midnight.

The house and techno night features a lineup of Queen Victoria, KAI, MaDDawgs and Rorri.

Early bird tickets were available at US$5 up to yesterday, with door entry now set at US$10.

For those looking for a more refined evening, Mara Mara at the corner of 2nd Street and Maasdorp Avenue in the Shamwari Complex presents Saturday Comeback, a night with Tannie Swiss, Mystic and Wowrae, organised by The Movement Entertainment Agency.

With events spread across comedy venues, backyards, studios, outdoor spaces and nightlife spots, Harare is proving this weekend that there is no shortage of locally-driven culture to celebrate beyond the main Africa Day stages.
