SPORT, Recreation, Arts and Culture minister Anselem Sanyatwe has given a glowing appraisal of the newly constructed Chahwanda Stadium in Kwekwe, describing it as a shining beacon amid Zimbabwe’s long-standing stadia crisis.

The 15 000-seat facility, built by Shepherd Chahwanda and his partners, was toured yesterday by Sanyatwe alongside the Ministry’s permanent secretary, Nicholas Moyo. The minister commended the private sector initiative, calling it “massive” and a model for well-resourced individuals to emulate.

“When you talk of investment, this is massive. Mr. Chahwanda and his partners are implementing the call by His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, that sporting facilities should not only be left to the government to construct or to maintain existing facilities,” he said.

He said individuals like Chahwanda have taken it upon themselves and “heeded the call to provide such facilities”.

“I am rightly informed that initially they wanted this facility to accommodate 5 000 people in terms of capacity, and then they increased the capacity to 10 000 and eventually made it to 15 000. What an encouragement in this city of Kwekwe,” Sanyatwe said.

He noted that the stadium was built to Caf-approved standards, making it one of Zimbabwe’s certified top-tier sporting facilities

"We should stand tall as Zimbabweans, knowing that we now have one of the facilities certified by Caf,” Sanyatwe said.
