Hardrock’s golden cathedral awaits true sparkle

THE gold mines of Kwekwe have finally produced a stage fit for royalty, but on Sunday afternoon, the crown jewels of Midlands football still looked a little unpolished.

Hardrock coach Kelvin Kaindu admitted his star-studded team still needs a major shift in gear if they are to live up to the dizzying expectations surrounding their debut season.

The richly assembled side huffed and puffed in their season opener against defending champions Scottland, proving that while money can construct a state-of-the-art stadium, it cannot instantly buy the cohesion of a championship-winning machine.

The occasion felt less like a routine league match and more like a coronation for the Kwekwe community.

After nearly two decades in the footballing wilderness, top-flight dreams were resurrected inside the new multi-million-dollar Chahwanda Stadium.

Constructed by gold magnate Shepherd Chahwanda and his business partner Walter Magaya, the 15 000-seater arena is arguably the finest in the country at the moment.

From its sweeping architectural lines to the electric atmosphere rolling around the bowl, the venue felt closer to a European stadium than a typical local ground.

However, for long stretches, the quality on the pitch struggled to match the grandeur of the surroundings as the match petered out to a goalless draw.

"This is a new team and there is still a lot that needs to be done," Kaindu admitted in his post-match interview.

“I’m happy with the organisation and the structure, but we were tactically outmatched by Scottland. What we need in the coming weeks is to improve our transition once we win possession.”

Hardrock’s starting line-up on Sunday bore almost no resemblance to the blue-collar squad that secured promotion.

In a sweeping transformation, only captain Munyaradzi Diro retained his place in the starting XI — one of just four survivors from the previous era.

Reigning Soccer Star of the Year Washington Navaya led the line but cut a frustrated figure, starved of service in a largely forgettable afternoon.

Munashe Bamara, the mercurial midfielder, was the lone bright spark, pulling the strings with darting runs but often appearing to perform a solo symphony.

The Eswatini connection of Sambulo Simelane and Neliswa “Tiger” Dlamini showed flashes of brilliance but were ultimately stifled by Scottland’s midfield, marshalled by the impressive Abubakar Moffat.

Perhaps the biggest concern for Kaindu lay in his goalkeeping department.

With star keeper Martin Mapisa sidelined by a knock sustained during the pre-season tour of Botswana, Tonderai Mateyaunga was handed the gloves.

The former Caps United and Simba Bhora goalkeeper looked jittery throughout the afternoon, seemingly rattled by the wall of noise from the supporters.

Every forward run and crunching tackle from the home side was met with a roar that echoed far beyond the city, yet the keeper never appeared fully settled amid the cacophony.

The “Hardrock” moniker suggests a team that is solid and unbreakable, but for now, they resemble a collection of expensive diamonds waiting to be set into a ring.

Next up, they travel to the searing heat of Kariba to face ZPC Kariba this Saturday.

It is a tricky fixture that will test their temperament far away from the comforts of their new “golden cathedral”.
