ZPC Kariba, Herentals share spoils in goalless stalemate

ZPC Kariba’s midfield controlled early proceedings, but Malvin Hwata and Munashe Kamwendo struggled to breach a resolute Herentals defence led by Brighton Majarira.

ZPC Kariba and Herentals FC played out a cagey 0-0 draw at Nyamhunga stadium yesterday, with both sides creating chances but failing to find the back of the net.

The match started on a high tempo, with both teams looking composed in possession. ZPC Kariba’s midfield controlled early proceedings, but Malvin Hwata and Munashe Kamwendo struggled to breach a resolute Herentals defence led by Brighton Majarira.

Herentals had their moments in the first half through Eric Dombo on the right flank and Tinashe Mupumha, whose free kick was well blocked by the ZPC wall. Fanuel Shoko had a chance from a free kick after his own infringement, but his effort went wide. At the other end, Kamwendo continued to trouble the visitors, only to be denied by Majarira. The half ended goalless despite several half-chances for both sides.

Herentals came out stronger after the break, with Mupumha orchestrating play in midfield.Tinashe Mazani went close with a header that was blocked by the ZPC defence. The introduction of Milton Chimedza in the second half changed the complexion of the game, as the Herentals substitute injected pace and urgency upfront. Chimedza repeatedly tested ZPC’s backline but was kept at bay by goalkeeper Carlos Musimwa.

ZPC Kariba found themselves under pressure for large spells in the second half, with their midfield appearing disjointed. Hwata missed from a loose ball in the 39th minute, while Shoko’s dribble into the Herentals box ended with a wayward shot. Despite late pushes from both sides, neither could capitalize, and the match finished 0-0.

Herentals Head Coach Celestino Benza said his side showed improvement after the break but rued missed opportunities.

“We started slow, but in the second half we controlled the game. Chimedza made a difference when he came on. We created chances, but we need to be more clinical in front of goal,” Benza said.

Home team coach Expense Chitukutuku praised his defence for holding firm under pressure.

“It was a tough match. Our midfield was broken at times in the second half, but the boys defended well. A point at home is not bad, but we need to work on converting our chances,” Chitukutuku said.
