Leaders Chapungu Queens maintained their dominance at the top of the Zimbabwe Women Premier Soccer League (ZWPSL) with a resounding 9-0 victory over Red Buffalo Sports Academy at Manyame Airbase Sports Club in Harare on Saturday.
Panashe Ganje scored a first-half hat-trick before adding her fourth goal six minutes after the break, while Edeline Mutumbami added a brace in the first half and a third goal in the 59th minute for Chapungu’s second hat-trick in the match. Blessing Mberende and Rudo Neshamba added a goal each to help Chapungu reach 61 points from 24 matches.
Second-placed Herentals Queens secured a 3-0 win over Harare City at Gwanzura Stadium. The defending champions scored all their goals in the second half, courtesy of Morelife Nyagumbo in the 53rd minute, Bethel Kondo in the 58th minute, and Millanda Chimbwanda in the 72nd minute, maintaining pressure on Chapungu at the top. Herentals are third on 59 points, with two games in hand.
Black Rhinos Queens head coach Brian Derera received the Coach of the Month Award, while Herentals duo Cynthia Shonga (Goalkeeper of the Month) and Praynance Zwawanda (Top Goal Scorer of the Month) were also honoured.
In other matches played on Saturday, Black Rhinos powered to a 3-1 win over Highlanders Royals at One Commando, leapfrogging Correctional Queens to third place with 57 points.
Correctional Queens, who were inactive over the weekend, sit on 55 points in fourth place. Platinum Royals maintained their fifth place with a 4-1 thrashing of Mpopoma Sports Academy at Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane
Shamaine Kapachi, Alicia Chinyoka, Charity Karuru, and Ennerty Chemhere scored for Platinum Royals, while Thando Sibanda scored for Mpopoma.
The weekend began with the recognition of outstanding players and a coach for September, sponsored by Utano. Red Buffalo Sports Academy's goalkeeper, Kelly Mukunga, was adjudged Player of the Month.
