The MDC yesterday dismissed the findings of a survey by Afrobarometer that indicated that the Welshman Ncube-led party would not win more than 1% of the vote in the forthcoming elections.

Afrobarometer is an “independent and non-partisan” research project that measures the social, political and economic atmosphere in Africa.

According to findings of the survey that was conducted in July that sampled 2 400 people, 32% of the people said if an election was to be held that month, they would vote for President Robert Mugabe of Zanu PF.

The survey revealed that 31% said they would vote for MDC-T leader Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.

But MDC national spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube said they were the fastest-growing party in the country and the results of the survey were not a true reflection of their support on the ground.

“We know our obituary has been written many times as we are persecuted for speaking the truth and sticking to our principles, but we will continue to do exactly that, that is what we know,” he said.

“We are the fastest-growing party in the country and we will not take the survey seriously, it does not reflect the picture on the ground. It is their survey and people are entitled to their opinions.” Dube said his party would only listen to the people on the ground “and ultimately it is the people that will decide”.

“We will only accept our true verdict after the people have spoken in the next elections and anything besides that is just wishful thinking,” he said.

“We will not pay any attention to the survey, but concentrate on mobilising support for our party on the ground.”

The MDC has been holding rallies in various parts of the country and last week conducted two rallies in Binga that each had an estimated attendance of 5 000 people.
