Alick Macheso’s upcoming album, set to be recorded this month, might be delayed because his drummer Obert Gomba has been hospitalised for serious chest pains.
Report by Tawanda Marwizi Own Correspondent Gomba was admitted at Chitungwiza Central Hospital on Sunday after failing to perform at weekend shows due to the pains.
Speaking at the sidelines of a family show at Harare Gardens on Sunday, Macheso said Gomba’s illness could derail their plans if he does not recover soon.
“We had planned to get in the studio this month, but if he fails to recover on time, we will have to change our plans because we have been rehearsing with him all along,” said Macheso.
The musician was, however, optimistic that his drummer would get well soon and return to work.
“God is with him and my hope is that he will be back in the camp in the near future so that we continue to entertain music lovers.”
When NewsDay visited Gomba at Chitungwiza Central Hospital yesterday, the drummer could hardly speak, but expressed hope for a quick recovery.
“The pain is serious and I have been here for the past three days. But I can say that I am recovering and I hope I will be back on stage soon,” said Gomba.

“I felt the pain on Thursday last week and I was rushed here. I was treated and discharged, but had to return on Sunday when the pain got worse.” He thanked his boss and the band for their support which he said motivated him even if he is in the hospital.
“It gives me a lot of hope because all the band members have been here, including Mudhara (Macheso). He comes here regularly to check on my condition and the welfare of my family.”
Gomba’s ill health is a heavy blow to Orchestra Mberikwazvo, which lost the services of rhythm guitarist Lucky Mumiriki who suffered a stroke, while, another guitarist Devine Muzenda has been in and out due to undisclosed illness.
