The fire, which started during lunch time, destroyed several old trailers and tyres at the transport company’s garage. Sources said the fire was caused by Musekiwa’s workers who lit an old tyre in the depot to drive away bees.

“They lit an old tyre which they wanted to use to chase away bees next to a place they wanted to work from. Unfortunately, the fire got out of hand. That is what I know from now, but investigations will continue,” a company official said.

The fire incident exposed Kwekwe City Council’s obsolete fire-fighting equipment and the local authority’s lack of capacity to handle disasters as it took them over three hours to douse the inferno with the help of fire fighters from Zimasco.

Musekiwa declined to comment over the incident, although some company officials said property worth thousands of dollars had been destroyed.
