Scottland FC invade Hardrock's Chahwanda fortress

Local News

THE 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season bursts into life this weekend with a headline fixture that feels more like a cup final than a traditional opening-day encounter.

On Sunday, defending champions Scottland FC travel to Chahwanda – The Heart Main Arena – to face flamboyant newcomers Hardrock FC in a potentially season-defining clash.

The blockbuster tie sets the tone for a campaign brimming with heavyweight derbies, redemption missions and ambitious new projects, as Zimbabwean football ushers in a new era under the glare of fresh infrastructure and reinforced squads.

Scottland arrive in ominous form. Any doubts about their hunger to retain the title were erased in the Castle Challenge Cup demolition of Dynamos FC at Rufaro Stadium. A 5-0 victory over DeMbare is rare; the ruthless efficiency with which Norman Mapeza’s men executed their plan was even more striking.

Goals from Emmanuel Ziocha, Tymon Machope, Walter Musona, Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat underlined the depth and firepower of a frontline that looks the most lethal in the league.

Mapeza has integrated his new signings seamlessly. Mohammed Issaka appears to be a commanding presence at the back, while Abubakar Moffat and Khwake Thwala provide balance in midfield, allowing Isaka Gurirab the freedom to express himself when introduced.

Yet Hardrock are not here to make up the numbers.

They unveil Chahwanda – The Heart Main Arena – arguably the finest football facility in the country. The state-of-the-art venue hosts top-flight action for the first time on Sunday, offering a pristine stage for what promises to be a tactical chess match.

Under the guidance of Kelvin Kaindu, Hardrock has recruited with surgical precision. The arrival of reigning Soccer Star of the Year Washington Navaya, alongside Junior Makunike and Donald Mudadi, gives them a core that knows how to win. Their international recruitment—bringing in Neliswa Dlamini, Sambulo Simelane, and the clinical Andrew Phiri—suggests a club with continental ambitions already.

While all eyes are on Chahwanda, the rest of the league is equally combustible.

At Baobab, the Platinum Derby sees Ngezi Platinum Stars square off against FC Platinum. It is a clash of wounded giants and determined contenders; Ngezi, hamstrung by a Fifa transfer ban and the loss of nine key players to Caps United, must rely on Kumbirai Mutuwekuziva’s tactical ingenuity.

Conversely, FC Platinum, now led by Joel Luphahla, are desperate to reclaim the throne they held for four consecutive years between 2017 and 2022.

For those looking for redemption, Dynamos travel to Gweru on Saturday to face TelOne FC at Ascot. After their 5-0 humbling, the Glamour Boys are playing for pride and proof of life.

Meanwhile, at Rufaro on Saturday, big-spending Chicken Inn debuts under Tonderai Ndiraya.

Having won the last two league titles with Simba Bhora and Scottland respectively, Ndiraya has emerged as the division’s Midas figure — but his influence will be tested immediately against Herentals FC.

The opening weekend is packed with intriguing subplots.

On Friday, the season officially kicks off at Rufaro as Norton-based MWOS FC take on FC Hunters in a high-stakes opener. In the Lowveld, Triangle host ZPC Kariba at Gibbo Stadium on Saturday.

Sunday will see Caps United, strengthened by several former Ngezi Platinum Stars players, hosting Agama FC at Rufaro Stadium.Meanwhile, the City of Kings — Bulawayo — will come alive with a fiery derby as Highlanders FC clash with Bulawayo Chiefs FC at Barbourfields Stadium.

With Sakubva Stadium unavailable, Manica Diamonds FC will travel to Gibbo to host former champions Simba Bhora FC.The 2026 season promises a blend of architectural marvels and tactical revolutions.Whether Scottland FC’s star power can overcome Hardrock’s discipline in the “Heart” of Chahwanda could set the tone for the year.
