THE Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has shut down over 30 unregistered tourism facilities across the country after a compliance deadline lapsed at the end of February.
The crackdown follows the expiry of a February 28 ultimatum for operators to register or face closure, marking a decisive enforcement phase in the government’s push to formalise the tourism sector.
The blitz is part of broader efforts to regularise the industry, enhance service standards and protect visitors from unlicensed operators working outside the law.
In an update, ZTA said the affected facilities were located in Masvingo (3), Gweru (9), Marondera (5), Bulawayo (3), Chinhoyi (1), Mutare (4) and Harare (3). It added that four unregistered operators in Harare were also facing similar action.
“This proactive approach underscores ZTA’s dedication to ensuring that all tourism operations meet required standards,” the authority said.
ZTA urged the public and industry stakeholders to report unregistered facilities, saying the initiative aims to foster collaboration in safeguarding the integrity of Zimbabwe’s tourism landscape.
Section 36 of the Tourism Act [Chapter 14:20] makes it mandatory for all tourism-related businesses (designated tourist facilities) to register with ZTA.
