More than 80 000 people have been processed through the Beitbridge border post since the government launched a repatriation programme to facilitate the safe and orderly return of Zimbabwean nationals from South Africa.
The exercise, which began in May, has so far seen 67 261 Zimbabwean nationals return home, comprising 54 630 self-repatriating citizens and 14 598 who received government assistance.
The border post has also facilitated the transit of 14 598 Malawian nationals and 67 Zambian citizens.
Authorities say the operation is progressing smoothly and continues to ensure that returning citizens are received in a safe, organised and dignified manner.
Matabeleland South minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Albert Nguluvhe, said the government had mobilised the necessary resources to ensure the programme continues uninterrupted.
“We have activated all systems to assist our fellow Zimbabweans so that they can safely proceed to their respective homes. We are not helping our people only; we are also helping our fellow neighbours from Zambia and Malawi,” he said.
Regional immigration officer Joshua Chibundu said all systems put in place for the repatriation programme were functioning effectively.
“From May 28 when this exercise started, we have since repatriated 54 630 who were self-repatriating and 14 598 government-assisted, bringing the total number to 67 261 Zimbabwean nationals repatriated from our neighbouring South Africa. For Malawi, we processed 14 598 and Zambia 67 for now. Everything is going according to plan without any problem,” he said.
