Mnangagwa ‘fires’ Majome from Human Rights Commission after reform critique

HARARE, Apr. 10 (NewsDay Live) – President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has removed Fungayi Jessie Majome as chairperson of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC), reassigning her to the Public Service Commission (PSC) with immediate effect, in a move that follows the commission’s sharp critique of Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3.

In a statement, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, said the reassignment was effected in terms of Section 202(1)(b) of the Constitution. Majome will now serve as a commissioner in the PSC.

The development comes soon after the ZHRC raised strong objections to provisions in the proposed amendment, warning that some clauses could undermine democratic principles, weaken accountability and erode constitutional safeguards.

The commission’s position added to mounting criticism of the Bill from legal experts and civil society organisations.
