Mzansi Flamenkhoi to perform ‘Dancing in the Dust’ at Reps

Life & Style
Flamenkhoi, a bold and boundary-breaking South African company, electrifies the stage with a powerful cultural exchange that transcends continents and centuries.

THE embassy of Spain in Zimbabwe continues to connect people through cultural exchange programmes and workshops as it has lined up Flamenkhoi, a Spanish dance group based in South Africa, to perform its latest production Dancing in the Dust at the Reps Theatre in Harare tomorrow night.

The Flamenkhoi outreach begins with a workshop at 8am until lunch hour, before gates open for the show at 5pm and the audience soars through a whirlwind of rhythm and passion with Dancing in the Dust.

There, the fiery heels of Flamenco meet the grounded soul of Khoi San dance in an unforgettable fusion that stirs the spirit and moves the earth.

Flamenkhoi, a bold and boundary-breaking South African company, electrifies the stage with a powerful cultural exchange that transcends continents and centuries.

In its latest production, the hypnotic claps and stomps of traditional Spanish Flamenco intertwine seamlessly with the earthy, ancestral pulse of southern African movement creating a visual and emotional spectacle unlike anything seen before.

“Step into the world of Dancing in the Dust, a dynamic performance that emerges as a groundbreaking spectacle blending the well-known Spanish Flamenco dance with the rhythmic traditions of the Khoi San and other southern Africa dance styles.

“Featuring performances by Rosana Maya, Isaac ‘Pinky’ !Xu Ramagole, Komani Hara, Cari-Juane Wessels and Leela-Lind Devar, Dancing In The Dust captivates audiences with elegant choreography and evocative storytelling.”

Following the performance, there will be a question and answer session with the performers and a presentation launch of Dancing in the Dust by Flamenkhoi.

Last Friday, the Spanish embassy in Zimbabwe facilitated a music workshop at the Music Cross Roads Academy, where Candeleros, a musical group based in Madrid, shared its music making processes which included traditional drums, maracas and bamboos including guitars, synthesisers, samplers and effects pedals.

Interestingly, Music Cross Roads Academy students could easily perform some of the rhythms on the percussion instrument.

The workshop by Candeleros was ahead of their performance at the Jacaranda Music Festival the next day at the Thorn Park Polo Grounds in Harare.

Candeleros consists of six core members namely Alexander Fernández (synths/guitar), Andrés Ramírez (minor percussion), Fernando Ochoa (guitar), Julio Alcocer (congas, djembe), Sergio Graterol (electronic drums) and UrkoLarrañaga (bass), including a guest Artist Kalusa from Music Cross Roads Academy in

Mozambique.

Candeleros’ most recent LPBuku o Muerte (2025) signals a mature, refined yet still wildly unpredictable sound that audiences in Harare are about to witness firsthand.

Prudence Katomeni Mbofana, the director for Music Crossroads Academy, expressed appreciation for being privileged to host the world renowned Candeleros, which resonated with their institution’s mandate to link theories and practical musicianship while building cultural harmony.
