HARARE, Jul. 30 (NewsDay Live) — Johane The Fifth of Africa International Church leader Archbishop Andby Makururu says he is praying for constitutional changes that could eventually see Zimbabwe becoming a one-party state, while urging citizens to stay away from planned protests against recent constitutional amendments.
Makururu made the remarks in an interview with NewsDay Live on Thursday, ahead of Friday’s demonstrations against Constitution Amendment No. 3 Act, which was recently signed into law by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The amendment has extended Mnangagwa’s rule by two years to 2030.
“I urge all Zimbabweans not to join the protest tomorrow. Let’s go and work for our families. We don’t want people who are lazy,” Makururu said.
“We need to develop our country and move forward. I am actually praying for Constitution Amendment No. 4 Bill. This is where my focus is now.”
Makururu, who has previously met Mnangagwa at State House on several occasions, said he was committed to supporting what he described as national unity and development.
He was among the first church leaders to publicly prophesy the passage of Constitution Amendment No. 3 Act.
His remarks come as political actors, including Zanu PF and Citizens Coalition for Change figures linked to self-imposed secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu, are reportedly considering further constitutional changes that could reshape Zimbabwe’s political system, including proposals that critics say may pave the way for a one-party state.
