A GENTLE giant with a golden voice, Jay Driss sings for the poor masses.

He sings for the disillusioned youths, who are now only seeking to be happy.

Having started sings sin 2023, Jonathan Tatenda Marasika (31) left South Africa a few years ago, where he was working as a VIP escort security and chose to return home.

He had been domiciled in Midrand, Johannesburg, before tracking the path back home.

Now, he has recorded about 20 songs, choosing the Afro hip-hop path.

“I started singing in 2023,” he tells NewsDay Weekender Life & Style.

“Growing up, I just liked music.

“I used to sing as a young boy at church, Glad Tidings and WWC.”

The Domboshava-based artiste can sing in English, Shona, Chewa and Zulu.

Jay Driss says he has collaborated with Malawian rapper Badaba on the song Zvakaoma, whose visuals were done at Mverechena shopping centre in Domboshava.

The song speaks about how the youths are trying to make it in life, but finding it difficult.

He has also done another collaboration with Tanatswah and Manasseh on the song Bvepfe, which talks about a girl who had dumped her boyfriend, but was now seeking a second chance.

Jay Driss also has a song Asibe Happy, which speaks to happiness, and then Njabulo, where the youths say they only want to be happy.

It features Starz, who also features on the song Ndivhurirei Nzira.

The songs are recorded and produced by T.Cool at Maziva Music Studio in Domboshava.

“The big challenge is the issue of funding,” Jay Driss said.

“I am doing this all out of my pocket.”

But that will not stop him.

“I see myself soaring to the top,” he says.
