THE Anglican Diocese of Manicaland's investment in sport and education is continuing to deliver results, with St Mathias Tsonzo High School emerging runners-up at the National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH) Under-17 football national championships in Bulawayo.
The Mutasa District-based school, representing Manicaland after winning the provincial title, narrowly missed out on national glory after losing 4-2 on penalties to Masvingo Province’s Pamushana High School following a goalless draw in regulation time.
St Mathias Tsonzo produced a disciplined defensive performance throughout the final, with goalkeeper Blessed Duri making crucial saves to keep his team in contention in a tightly contested encounter.
The achievement further strengthens the Anglican Diocese of Manicaland’s reputation for nurturing excellence beyond the classroom. The Diocese runs several high-performing schools whose students consistently record strong results in Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations.
The Diocese recently celebrated another milestone when St Augustine High School (Tsambe) pupil Colline Mutepfa was elected Child Vice-President, highlighting its growing influence in youth development.
Diocese secretary Father Edmund Samutereko said the institution remained committed to developing well-rounded learners through both academic and sporting programmes.
"As a Diocese, we take both education and sport seriously, and we would like to congratulate St Mathias Tsonzo for reaching the national finals of the NASH Under-17 tournament," he said.
"We are proud of the team and have welcomed them with the respect they deserve."
