BULAWAYO, Aug. 2 (NewsDay Live) — Police have arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the alleged theft of copper cables from a company in Bulawayo.
The suspect, Nigel Chakanyuka, was arrested on July 30 after he was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle copper cable out of the company’s premises.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrest, saying Chakanyuka was allegedly found in possession of 23 metres of seven-core, 2.5mm armoured copper cable.
“The ZRP confirms the arrest of Nigel Chakanyuka (27) in connection with a case of theft of copper cables which occurred at a company in Bulawayo on 30/07/2026,” police said in a statement.
According to police, the suspect allegedly cut the cable using an unknown object before attempting to remove it from the premises.
“The suspect was apprehended while allegedly attempting to smuggle 23 metres of seven-core armoured copper cable (2.5mm) out of the premises after cutting it using an unknown object,” the statement said.
Copper cable theft has become a persistent challenge in Zimbabwe, with incidents disrupting electricity, telecommunications and other critical infrastructure.
Police have urged members of the public to report suspected cases of cable theft and related criminal activities as authorities intensify efforts to curb infrastructure vandalism.
