Makanakaishe Charamba delivered another statement performance on the international stage, securing a superb silver medal in the men's 200 metres at the Gyulai István Memorial Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix in Budapest yesterday.
The Zimbabwean sprinter crossed the line in an impressive 20,09 seconds, a time that placed him firmly among the world's best over the distance and underlined the rapid progress he has been making on the global circuit this season.
Charamba was pipped to gold by Morocco's Yassine Hssine, who produced an extraordinary run to clock a national record time of 19,92 seconds and claim the top spot. Nigeria's Udodi Chudi Onwuzurike completed the podium in third place with a time of 20,18 seconds, meaning the top three positions were swept by African athletes in what was a remarkable continental statement at one of Europe's most prestigious athletics meetings.
For Charamba, the result continues a run of impressive form that has established him as one of Africa's most exciting sprinting talents. Coached by Zimbabwe's own Ken Harnden at Auburn University, the young Zimbabwean is building a reputation as a genuine podium contender at international level, and performances like this one in Budapest will only strengthen the case for his inclusion among the continent's sprinting elite.
With the athletics season still in full swing and LA28 qualification pathways becoming increasingly important, Charamba's Budapest silver could not have come at a better time for Zimbabwe's track and field programme.
