WARRIORS interim coach Kaitano Tembo has declared that his charges will take no prisoners and are playing for nothing less than a victory when they lock horns with perennial rivals Nigeria in a blockbuster Unity Cup semifinal clash at the Valley Stadium in London tonight.
Kickoff is 830pm.
The prestigious international tournament, which was inaugurated in 2002 but halted in 2004, was successfully revived in 2024.
Tonight, a new-look Zimbabwe marks its debut appearance in the competition with a heavyweight narrative, aiming to upstage the defending champions and secure a place in the final. The winner of tonight’s match will face either Jamaica or India, who meet in the second semifinal tomorrow.
The final is scheduled for May 30.
History heavily favours the Super Eagles. The Warriors have not beaten Nigeria since that solitary win on August 1, 1981, when they defeated the West Africans 2-0 in an international friendly at Rufaro Stadium.
Since then, Nigeria have largely dominated, including a 2-0 win at the 2006 Afcon in Egypt, and a brutal 2006 World Cup qualification campaign that saw the Warriors thumped 3-0 in Harare and 5-1 in Abuja.
However, the competitive gap has narrowed significantly in recent years. The Warriors head into tonight's match high on confidence after frustrating the Super Eagles in their most recent clashes during the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

In November 2023, Walter Musona scored a spectacular long-range free-kick to open the scoring in a 1-1 draw in Rwanda. More recently, on March 25, 2025, a dramatic 90th-minute equaliser from Wolverhampton Wanderers star Tawanda Chirewa secured a thrilling 1-1 draw away at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo — a result that ultimately contributed to Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the match, Tembo emphasised that while history is encouraging, his focus remains strictly on the present.
"Yes, obviously to some extent," Tembo said regarding the psychological boost from recent draws.
"But at the same time, I think what's important is for us to approach every game as it comes, one game at a time. This is a different game, a different scenario, and a different situation. So we need to make sure that we prepare and not really worry too much about previous results. What’s key is for us to go out there and give our all, play to win, and not dwell too much on the past.”
Preparations for the match have been complicated by logistical hurdles, as the tournament falls outside the official Fifa calendar window.
"I think the preparations have been going well, although we haven't had a full complement of all the players with the rest of the players joining in today," Tembo revealed.
He said he was impressed by the attitude and mentality of the team.
“Looking forward to the game, we can only promise to go out there and give our best, play some good, entertaining football, and we hope our fans will come and support us. If that is all done, then hopefully we will make them proud.”
Despite the absentees, the Warriors' camp in Birmingham has continued to gather strength. UK-based starlet Chirewa is ready to torment the Nigerians again, while Prosper Padera, Godknows Murwira, and Shane Maroodza have officially joined the squad.
Murwira, the Scottland FC defender, was drafted into the squad as a late replacement for Motherwell forward Tawanda Maswanhise, who was granted leave to rest following a gruelling season in the Scottish Premiership.
Tembo expressed immense excitement over the blend of youth and UK-based talent at his disposal.
“Yes, most definitely. I think the players that we have at the moment in camp, I’m very positive and very excited. Looking at young players like Abubakar Moffat, Mongameli Tshuma, Tawanda Chirewa, and Corbin Mthunzi — those are players, as well as Future Sibanda, who have raised their hands, and hopefully they will be able to show what they can do. I am quite positive,” the tactician added.
With a massive Zimbabwean diaspora turnout expected at the Valley Stadium tonight, Tembo urged his team to seize the moment on the grand stage.
“It’s a huge occasion for us, coming here and making our debut in the Unity Cup. We should always try to make a statement. We will have more fans coming to support us, and that should spur the players on and encourage them to perform to the best of their abilities. We also have a few players based here who should adapt more easily to the conditions and perform well.”
Off the pitch, the team’s preparations received a major social boost ahead of the match. The Warriors attended a prestigious welcome dinner hosted by official partners Diaspora Insurance.
The glitzy event was attended by Zimbabwean embassy representatives, Zifa executive committee member Kudzai Kadzombe, and top entertainers ExQ and King Kandoro, providing the squad with a warm home-away-from-home reception before they head to London for tonight's massive clash.
