THE Zimbabwe table tennis national team shifted preparations to the tournament venue at Glen City in Goromonzi on Monday as they intensified training for the Africa Zone Five Championships set for July.
Players focused on technical drills, tactical patterns and match simulations ahead of the regional tournament, which is expected to attract teams from Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia.
Senior player Vikram Singh said the squad was using every session to fine-tune areas critical for competition.
“We’re treating this as a chance to refine technique, correct weaknesses and build the rhythm we’ll need against top regional opponents,” he said.
Serving consistency and shot selection have emerged as key focus areas. Young players Tatenda Mumvuma and Lydale Chaffs completed 500 standard serves as part of their daily routine and recorded no serving errors during simulated match play, according to head coach Liping Wang.
Wang highlighted improvements in Mumvuma’s offensive transitions and drop-shot control, while Chaffs has sharpened technical details and developed a more defined playing style.
“For Zimbabwe, the tournament is about more than results. We want to improve regional competitiveness, expose emerging players to international competition and boost our seeding for future continental events,” Wang said.
Hosting the championships in Mashonaland East is also expected to benefit the home side through familiarity with playing conditions and reduced travel fatigue.
